Set in the gently rolling foothills and spruce forests of the Gulkana River Uplands and framed by low peaks and ridges, Meier’s Lake is a gem along the pleasantly winding Richardson Highway. The Wrangell and Chugach Mountains can be distantly seen to the south, while the Alaska Range marches across the horizon to the north. The Alaska Pipeline also makes for an interesting element in the landscape.
Anglers will find Meier’s Lake a fabulous source for the wild, sea-going Rainbow Trout known as Steelhead, as well as abundant lunker Lake Trout and the world-class fighters, Dolly Varden. Arctic Grayling are perhaps the lake‘s most populous fish; for bank fishing with dry flies, try the inlet and watch for rising grayling, then don your hip boots and prepare to catch some very large fish! One of Alaska’s most popular sports fish, the Northern Pike can be found in Meier’s Lake by the boat loads. Other species include Walleye and Crappie. Fishing licenses can be purchased at Meier’s Lake Roadhouse for this lovely, public access lake.
