There is fabulous fishing for grayling on Meier's Lake, while the entire Copper River drainage system is alive with salmon. A popular Bureau of Land Management hiking trail starts nearby.
The Richardson Highway #4 follows the Gulkana River, designated one of the nation’s Wild and Scenic Rivers, for 65 miles as it races through Class 3 rapids or meanders peacefully from its headwaters just north of Paxson at glacier-fed Summit Lake, known for its luminescent green color. Summit Lake is Alaska’s northernmost body of water draining into the Gulf of Alaska, rather than the Bering Sea.
All-season recreational pursuits in the Copper River Valley include climbing and hiking, canoeing, rafting and boating, snow machining and skiing, sight and flight seeing, glacier trekking, hunting and trapping, berry picking, wildlife viewing and fishing. After the spectacular King Salmon season, red sockeye salmon fill the river throughout mid-summer, followed by pinks in late summer and a strong silver salmon run in the fall.
The annual Copper Basin 300 sled dog race passes through Meier’s Lake. Alaska’s largest snow machine event, the Arctic Man Ski & Sno-Go Classic, draws 10,000 spectators in early April. This pristine area is also home to more than 140 bird species including eagles and trumpeter swans, and large mammals such as moose, caribou and graceful Dall sheep.
