Sleep and Eat
Klondike Gold Fields offers rental housing for staff. All tenants share the kitchen, dining, living, and laundry room. Our rental fee includes heat, water, electric, and telephone (local calls only). Washers and dryers are provided at no cost for employees. An Internet hot spot, if not available on site, is available locally nearby. Housing options can vary from season to season. Staff may have shared or single rooms depending on availability. Depending on our options, staff should also be prepared to "rough it" a little...staff have been housed in cabins and trailers in the past. Because housing options can change, rental information can, too. You can inquire about housing options for the coming season.
No pets allowed. All shared facilities are non-smoking.
If you choose not to reside in employee housing it is best to start looking for alternative housing at your earliest opportunity. The demand for seasonal housing is very high so apartments and houses can be quite expensive and difficult to find. It often proves challenging for employers to secure affordable housing for staff and often have to get creative.
Other Perks
We offer a competitive wage and a substantial “retention” bonus to employees who complete their contracts in good standing. When possible we try to schedule employees 2 consecutive days off a week to enjoy the local area. We provide our employees with complimentary tickets on our tours for friends and family. We have reciprocal touring agreements with many local companies so our employees can experience other local tours at a reduced rate. Our employees enjoy discounts on items in our gift shops and at our Gold Rush Restaurant as well. Other benefits for returning staff include wage increase, reduced rent and travel reimbursement.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Getting here: You have three choices – Air, Land or Sea….
By Air: The closest major airport to Skagway is Juneau, Alaska, and the only major airline that flies into Juneau is Alaska Airlines. Once there, you can fly to Skagway on a 45-minute commuter flight. Both Wings of Alaska and Air Excursions fly to Skagway each day, weather permitting. The Alaska Marine Highway ferry also makes daily runs between Juneau and Skagway, which is a less expensive option. The Alaskan Marine Highway ferry terminal is about a four mile cab ride from the Juneau airport.
By Land: If you are traveling by car or an RV, you'll join the growing number of visitors who travel the Alaska Highway each year. Skagway is only 110 miles south from the Alaska Highway, via the South Klondike Highway. The lakes of the Yukon and British Columbia that you'll pass along the way are the headwaters of the great Yukon River. This modern two-lane highway is an easy scenic drive.
By Sea: Skagway is the northern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway System. A fleet of modern, car-carrying vessels serves all of Southeast Alaska. Northbound travelers can access the system at Bellingham, Washington and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Each vessel has an observation lounge, bar, cafeteria and a solarium where camping is allowed free of charge. Mainline vessels also feature stateroom accommodation. Upon your arrival in Skagway, someone from our staff will be there to greet you and bring you to the Klondike Gold Fields.
Once you’re here: A car isn’t really necessary. Walking and bicycling will get you anywhere you want to go in Skagway.
For Fun
Skagway has a multitude of recreational activities to offer….
Skagway is at the start of the historic Chilkoot Trail, which follows the footsteps of the gold rush stampeders and ends at Bennet Lake in British Columbia. The Trail (33 mi) is a favorite amongst both experienced and amateur hikers and is said to be the longest museum in the world. In addition to the Chilkoot Trail, Skagway has a world class trail system with a wide range of hiking trails and water routes with varying difficulty.
For the sports enthusiast, Skagway provides many outlets for recreation. The summer softball league is a favorite pastime among seasonal and year round residents alike. In addition to softball, there are several foot and bike relay races throughout the year hosted by Skagway, Whitehorse and Haines. These annual events have continued to grow in popularity and participation, bringing “drive in” and ferry visitors to Skagway from all over the world.
The Skagway Recreation Center provides multiple outlets for physical fitness. The Recreation Center houses a Gymnasium with full size basketball court that may be used for volleyball, badminton, and tennis; as well as a 1700 square foot climbing wall. The Recreation Center is also equipped with a fully furnished weight room and cardio room. Outside, there is an outdoor skate park that is converted to an ice skating rink during winter months. Furthermore, the Recreation Center offers a wide variety of fitness classes. Anyone is welcome to use the Recreation Center for a nominal fee, and memberships may be purchased. Class descriptions and times are published by the recreation center, and may be viewed on the Skagway Recreation Center web site at: www.skagwayrecreation.org.
The town celebrates many events during the summer, such as Solstice and Independence Day. Local businesses put on events of their own such as Spring Stroll, Rhubarb Festival and open Mic Nights. Even visit nearby Haines for the Southeast Alaska State Fair and their annual Brew Fest.
Additional activities include camping, fishing, rafting, horseback riding, and photography to just name a few. Staff are encouraged to take advantage of the ferry system and local tour operators to get out and experience all Alaska and the Yukon have to offer!
