Klondike Gold Fields History
In 2009, in response to cruise line suggestions, a brewery and restaurant were added to the facility and the name of the company was changed to the Klondike Gold Fields (KGF). This reflected that the facility was a destination with a variety of things to see and do as opposed to a single tour.
In the spring of 1999, Tom Hall approached his friend, Ron Holway, who was a lifelong gold miner, about moving Ron’s 1937 dredge to Skagway. The dredge was sitting in the Klondike gold fields north of Dawson City. Ron’s dream as a gold miner was to preserve a little bit of gold mining history for future generations to see. Tom and Ron convinced other friends and family to move and reconstruct this historical dredge on the shores of the Skagway River.
In May 2000 the Klondike Gold Dredge (KGD) opened for tours. The two attractions were gold panning and the dredge. In August 2001 KGD was first offered as an add-on tour on a cruise line. In subsequent years, as other cruise lines picked up KGD dredge and gold panning tours other attractions were added.
